The Pilot Metropolitan Fountain Pen is a solid performer that does everything right. The ink starts flowing easily and immediately. This would be a very good first fountain pen because it does everything so well. The nib starts and feeds ink perfectly; the nib is smooth and never scratches the paper. The pen is unlikely (as far as fountain pens go) to have the feed problems that turn people off of fountains pens.
The pen is of medium girth and weight. The nib is very smooth; it is not slippery, but some people might prefer a nib that has some "tooth." Its aluminum body is glossy but not slippery in the hand.
The pen comes with an unusual "bladder style" mechanism to draw ink into the pen. Disposable cartridges can also be used. A cartridge converter is available but must be purchased separately.
The Metropolitan comes in three colors: black, silver and gold. Three subtle styles are offered: zig-zag, classic (plain) and dots. In all, 9 styles are available.
Pros: Good value at less than $20
Cons: Some people may find it too heavy, or they might not like the heaviness or coldness of metal
