Could BMW's new i3 electric car bring serious competition to Tesla? The company's charismatic CEO Elon Musk doesn't seem to be worried about the German automaker's first serious attempt at an all electric vehicle.

During Tesla's earnings conference call Wednesday, Musk was asked to give his opinion on the BMW i3. Musk giggled. After the chuckle, Musk said the i3 has ways to go.

"I'm glad to see that BMW is bringing an electric car to market. That's cool. There's room to improve on the i3 and I hope that they do."

According to Businessinsider's Mamta Badkar , Musk's answer was met with laughter, which caused more giggling from the CEO. It lasted about 10 minutes. After having a good laugh at BMW's expense, Musk finished answering the question.

"I really do encourage other manufacturers to bring electric cars to market. It's a good thing, and they need to bring it to market and keep iterating and improving and make better and better electric cars, and that's what going to result in humanity achieving a sustainable transport future. I wish it was growing faster than it is."

While Tesla's net income hit $26 million in Q2, a 70 percent increase from Q1, the company still lost $30 million. Tesla’s CFO Deepak Ahuja, called Q2 “a confusing quarter.” As for the i3, BMW will start taking orders in the fall .
