If you wonder if Nintendo has taken note of its underwhelming Wii U sales, as well as the impending introduction of the Xbox One and PS4, the answer is yes. As reported by The Verge on Wednesday , the company is cutting the price of the Wii U Deluxe set by $50, as of Sept. 20.

That means that sales of the Wii U Deluxe set will pretty much come to a halt between now and then. Notably -- and strangely -- Nintendo's announcement did not address the Wii U Basic set, which now is priced at the same amount as the Wii U Deluxe.

The Deluxe set includes 32GB of internal storage, vs. the Basic set's 8GB, and also comes with the Nintendo Land video game, a Deluxe Digital Promotion, a Wii U GamePad Stand, a Wii U GamePad Cradle, and a Wii U Console Stand.

Analysts and shareholders have been pressing Nintendo to cut the console's price, and Nintendo has finally acceded to their wishes. Since its launch last year, the Wii U has seen rather tepid sales, with only 160,000 units sold worldwide during the last reported quarter.

The company has blamed the poor response on a lack of strong, first-party titles, and Q4 2013 promises to be a strong period for Nintendo's software team. The company is set to ship Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze , Super Mario 3D World , and Wii Party U. Those titles are all expected to hit retail before the holiday shopping season.
