HTC, the Taiwanese smartphone manufacturer has been struggling to keep its head above water since 2012 when profits plunged 70 percent with no end in sight. But today’s stats for May sales could be even more ominous for the company.

Its HTC One M8 smartphone, deemed the absolute best Android phone on the market, couldn’t help overall business for the phone manufacturer and sales went south by 27 percent in May, which is traditionally a very strong sales month.

What’s Going On?

At the moment, HTC can be compared to seemingly cursed locations for unsuccessful restaurants. No matter how many new changes are implemented, nothing seems to work.

Having the world’s best Android smartphone, evidently, can’t cure the HTC blues. Review sites from around the world point to the One M8 is a tour de force in features, styling, performance, and power. But still, HTC struggles.

Although the answers aren’t clear as to why HTC continues to circle the drain of failure, some have speculated that the company missed the boat by not ramping up in its production of the One for the spring sales rush, thus leaving customers empty-handed for the smartphone.

It’s the Customer Service

Although not mentioned by analysts, it seems that HTC has terrible customer service that rated a dismal 36.61 points out of a possible 200, according to reviews on customerservicescoreboard.com.

Many faulted HTC for problems with not being able to resolve phone issues and a lack of HTC product knowledge by customer service reps. Scores were particularly low in “friendliness” and “cancellation” requests. If this is the true reason for HTC's problems, it needs to rethink how it relates to its customers.

Off Course

Whatever the real reasons are for HTC’s constant decline and inability to capture the imagination of potential customers, it will need some drastic changes regarding how its products are marketed and how the over all business strategy at HTC.

If HTC can’t generate more sales with a product that has been universally lauded as the “best Android phone in the world,” the problems must stem from how the company operates.

Time is running out, and some crucial management changes are needed at HTC before it finally enters the abyss.
