This week I was fortunate enough to be invited to the BlackBerry 10 Launch Event in New York City as a VIP member of BlackBerry Elite. As an added bonus, I was given my very own BlackBerry Z10 to keep. I will now share with you my initial impressions of the phone's hardware.
The Good
Where to start? The phone is slick. I was asked a few times by BlackBerry reps what I thought about the phone after having it for a couple hours, and I honestly ran out of adjectives to describe all the great features it has.
I'l start with the screen. 4.2 inches with a resolution of 1280x768 and 356 PPI. Pictures look great, and videos are as clear as I've ever seen them on a BlackBerry device, even the much larger PlayBook.
The Z10 has two cameras; an 8MP rear-facing camera and a 2MP front-facing camera. The former has 5X digital zoom and records in 1080p, while the latter has 3X zoom and records in 720p. When taking a picture with either camera, there is a white box on your screen that you can move around to change the focus. The box will appear white when you first point the camera. From there it will begin to auto-focus. Once it's focused, the box will turn green. Tapping anywhere on the screen, or one of the volume rocker buttons, will snap the picture.
There's a dual-core 1.5 Ghz processor that keeps the phone running smoothly. As of yet I have not had any of the typical issues you see on BlackBerry phones. I'm proud to say that I feel as though the days of battery pulls are behind us!
The Bad
Its hard to find some negatives in a device that you've been waiting to get your hands on for two years. The shock and awe of finally having it makes it seem practically perfect in every way. All day I tried my hardest to look for a single bad thing about its hardware. The only thing I could come up with was the placement of the charging port. I would prefer it on the bottom of the phone.
The Summary
Keep in mind that these are only first impressions. Once I give my full review in a couple of weeks, I just might have a couple other things I'm not too happy with on the BlackBerry Z10. I was asked so many times to summarize what I thought of the Z10. The summary is simple; worth the wait.
