NDTV reported on Jan. 31, 2013, that an innocent teenage girl Hadiya Pendleton who had performed for President Barak Obama’s inauguration ceremony in Washington was mercilessly shot dead by an unknown gunman in Chicago.

On Tuesday when Hadiya went out with her group of girlfriends to a park not far away from Obama's home in a South Side neighborhood little did she know that this would be the last time she would be with them.

The group of girls took shelter from rain into a nearby canopy. Suddenly they saw a boy rushing towards them and before they reacted, he opened fire on them, shot Hadiya in her back which eventually lead to her death.

Two other boys were also injured but they were lucky enough to survive with no serious wounds. According to police, the gunman mistook the group, apparently and was not even aiming at Pendleton.

The shooting also comes as the nation is in a debate over gun violence in the wake of the massacre of 20 young children and six staff members at a Connecticut elementary school in Chicago.

So far in 2012, Chicago has seen 42 homicides. Over 506 people were killed in the city.

The news of the shooting reached The White House and spokesmen Jay Carney, called it "another example of the problem that we need to deal with."

Pendleton was like any other American girl with a generous nature and happy face. She was said to be a bright student and had interest in Latin and sports.
