If you work in construction or don’t like fragile little phones that seem to break by just looking at them, the Kyocera Torque phone, announced by the company today, may be just what you and the Terminator need.
Built for rugged use
The Kyocera Torque is no wimp when it comes to braving harsh use and the elements. It can stand up to 95 percent humidity for 10 straight days, resist six hours in an environment of heavy dust (great when visiting your attic, basement or construction site), and can take a dunk in three feet of water for 30 minutes without batting an eyelash.
For those who have a tendency of dropping their phones into the toilet, the waterproof feature of the Torque will pay for itself by not having to buy a new phone.
In addition, owners will be glad to hear that if they ever get locked into a storage freezer by accident, they’ll be able to call out for help with no problems because the Kyocera Torque can operate in temperatures down to minus 4 degrees Fahrenheit.
If you take your Torque into the sauna, it will withstand the sweltering temperature to 122 degrees Fahrenheit. The phone is operational for three hours in these extreme hot and cold temperatures.
But wait, there’s more
Being a tough phone is one thing, but the Torque is also a pretty respectable phone too. It has a 5-megapixel front-facing camera, a 1.3-megapixel rear-facing camera, 4-inch IPS display, dual-core processor, Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich OS, hefty 2,500mAh battery, and Sprint’s well-known push-to-talk feature.
For those who have always had dreams of becoming bionic, Kyocera says it has a “proprietary tissue-conduction audio technology” called a Smart Sonic Receiver. The company explains that this new tech allows the phone to transmit sound directly into the inner ear, eardrum, and body tissues. This sounds a bit creepy, but new tech often is.
The Kyocera Torque will be available from Sprint on March 8 and will retail for $99 with a standard two-year contract.
