Anonymous has hacked the U.S. State Department in memory of Internet freedom fighter Aaron Swartz, and other Internet freedom fighters either jailed or censored.
Hacktivists associated with the international Internet collective known as Anonymous made public the details of the hack and dump on Monday, Feb. 18, via Twitter. The action comes as part of the ongoing Operation Last Resort ( #OpLastResort ).
As proof of the hack, Anonymous liberated and published a database containing the personal information of State Department employees, including names, birth dates, phone numbers, email addresses, home and work addresses.
The following is a statement from Anonymous about the State Department hack and dump:
Freedom for all Anons!
Our reasons for this attack are very simple. You’ve imprisoned or either censored our people. We will not tolerate things as such. You don’t see us going around censoring everything that is inappropriate or we do not like. Basically, you tried to put an end to us and you got owned, there’s nothing more you can say or do. You took away Topiary, Avunit, Neuron, Pwnsauce, lolspoon, Aaron Swartz shall we go on? Heck you think this makes us weak? We are only growing stronger because of the fact that you are forcing us to revolt. When the lions roar you will hear them. And when it’s feeding time you’ll be our dinner.
Aaron Swartz this is for you, this is for Operation Last Resort.
We are Anonymous.
We are Legion.
We do not forgive.
We do not forget.
Expect us.
#OpLastResort
Operation Last Resort ( #OpLastResort ) is part of a concerted effort by Anonymous to force the U.S. government to reform computer crime law in the wake of Aaron Swartz's death. Aaron Swartz, a brilliant technologist and Internet freedom fighter, was laid to rest last month after committing suicide. In honor of Aaron and other Internet freedom fighters being persecuted by the U.S. government, Operation Last Resort continues.
