Yahoo news reported on Feb. 21, 2013, that former New Mexico Senator Pete Domenici admitted to fathering a son more than 30-years ago in an extramarital affair with a senator's daughter.
He had kept it a secret since then and told his family in the past "several months."
The 80-year-old Republican represented New Mexico for more than 30 years in a statement to the Albuquerque Journal said that he pledged to the mother of his son not to ever reveal parenthood and he had tried to honor that pledge to her.
He was now worried about the impact on Michelle Laxalt, 58, and the privacy of his son Adam Laxalt, 30.
Domenici, who lives in Washington, D.C., said in a statement that he is solely responsible for his past action that has caused hurt and disappointment to his wife, children, family, and others.
He has apologized as best as he can to his wife, and he deeply regretted this. He hoped that New Mexicans will view that his accomplishments for his beloved state outweigh his personal transgression.
