Facebook says it was hacked last month. A report posted today at CNET says Facebook says it was hacked last month, but all member data remains safe. The social networking giant says employees unknowingly downloaded malicious software last month that led to the security of the website being compromised.
Facebook posted a statement today on its security blog, saying:
"This attack occurred when a handful of employees visited a mobile developer website that was compromised. The compromised website hosted an exploit which then allowed malware to be installed on these employee laptops."
Facebook did not admit to the hack until after they issued a patch on February 1st, but say they want to reassure users their personal information was not passed on to attackers. The company said, "Foremost, we have found no evidence that Facebook user data was compromised."
The company says it is in cooperation with law enforcement and has worked with other organizations that were victims of the same exploit.
