Intel has announced plans to offer a TV set-top box later this year, which will put it in direct competition with other similar products such as Roku, Apple TV, and others.

However, what Intel is looking to do to set it apart from competing devices, is to offer live TV as well, though the company did not reveal if they are teaming up with any other providers such as Hulu, Netflix, etc.

The company, according to AllThingsD , has apparently built a new group called Intel Media, that will focus on the internet TV platform.

“For the first time, we will deliver a new consumer electronics product under a new brand,”said Erik Huggers, Corporate VP of Intel Media. “We’ll offer consumers a box, and they’ll buy this directly from us. It’ll be an Intel-powered device with fantastic industrial design. But it’s not just a device. We’re working with the entire industry to figure out how we get live TV to consumers over the Internet.”

No details on a price point or release date were given, but Huggers says the plan is to offer one solution that includes live TV, on-demand, catch-up TV and apps.
