As a moderate fan of the WWE, I have always enjoyed a good Pay Per View event. The only problem is that charging it to my cable bill wasn't always the smart thing as the bill can be a little high.
The first PPV of the new year is always the annual Royal Rumble. This event features 30 superstars trying to eliminate each other by tossing opponents over the top rope until only one remains. The superstar who wins gets to headline WrestleMania and choose to challenge for the WWE Championship belt or the World Heavyweight Championship belt.
We did not want to miss this important PPV, but I was not going to pay $10 on top of the $45 it already cost to watch it so the cable company can show it to me in HD. There had to be a better way.
I thought the solution was to buy the show directly from WWE.com and stream it through my MacBook that would be hooked up to the HDTV. One problem, I didn't have the necessary adapters on such short notice.
But thanks to a lovely associate at the Apple Store, the solution already existed in my house in AirPlay.
AirPlay lets you mirror what is streaming on your Apple compatible device to your TV via Apple TV. All you have to do is check the Apple TV box on the compatible device.
That's all I needed to know. And with that, using my brother's iPad Mini, I was able to stream the Royal Rumble in our living room for all, except our mother, to enjoy. The picture was great and we didn't lose our wireless connection at any point during the 3-hour event. It was beautiful.
Next time you look at your cable bill and wonder why it's so high, consider that the solution might already exist in your house.
