Technorati got a sneak peek at the iPad screen (seen here) and capabilities of a new app in development for documentary and reality producers, Lumberjack, from Intelligent Assistance in Burbank, California. The tool offers a server-based onset logging system using keyword buttons for people, places, action and content and directly connects those keywords with production's media using time of day.
The software works on the iPad and other devices and allows camera assistants, producers and/or crew to record metadata for their shots on the set during production. Designed specifically for reality and documentary producers, it logs all data to a central server from multiple on-set devices. That data is merged with XML (FCP 7 or FCP X format) from a NLE by the OS X desktop application. Data is stored off-set in a standard mySQL database.
According to the developer, Philip Hodgetts, "Lumberjack is extensible and we expect to build integration with metadata extraction tools. For the HPA Retreat we will also be demonstrating an innovative string-out function for people or metadata."
Hodgetts says, "We expect the FCP X version to be available before NAB 2013, with the FCP 7 version (for both legacy Final Cut Pro and Premiere Pro workflows) to follow soon after if not released at the same time."
Price point is not yet announced and the full capabilities of the app have not been revealed online, except for a brief early demo at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z7RXoWQ4tzI, You can learn more about Intelligent Assistance here: http://assistedediting.com
The Hollywood Post Alliance meets every year in an off-Hollywood under-stated location such as this year's Indian Wells, to present new technology to members of the professional post production community. The HPA retreat is scheduled for February 18-22 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel. http://www.hpaonline.com
