In the mid 1990s one of the biggest crazes around the world was the emergence of virtual pet toys. Kids of all ages, and adults too, would take care of their electronic friends by feeding and playing with them. Neglect your little virtual pet and it would get sick or go to that big electronics room in the sky.
But today, Bandai, the original manufacturers of the Tamagatchi toys, have released an Android app that mimics the addicting gameplay, fun, and frustration of keeping the little digital critters alive and happy.
Tamagotchi turns 16
Tamagotchi digital pet toys have sold over 78 million units worldwide, and continue to sell to this day. The virtual pet’s first appearance on the scene in 1996 caused a wave of copy-cat devices in the toy industry, but none of them seemed to capture the magic and wonder as the original egg-shaped toy produced by Bandai.
To celebrate Tamagotchi’s 16th birthday, Bandai America Inc. said “We’re giving you a gift,” in the form of the free Tamagotchi Android app.
The freebie app is called Tamagotchi L.i.f.e. (Love is fun everywhere) and can be downloaded from the Google Play Store for all Android phones and tablets.
For those who want to relive the days of playing with their Tamagotchi virtual pets, get ready to be a full-time caretaker again!
