My experience with Pentax goes back to the original K-1000. In fact, my first digital camera was the Pentax WG1 (reviewed a couple of years ago).

Now, thanks to the mind of industrial designer Marc Newson, Pentax's latest mirrorless camera really epitomizes the word “hybrid”.

To look at it, you will notice its unique boxy design. It is easy to hold. Whether you have a large or small set of hands, it fits easily.

Unboxing it was a very much anticipated pleasure, as the last interchangeable lens camera I used (which I still have) is my beloved K1000.

After about two hours, the battery was fully charged. It, as well as a 16 GIG SDHC card was installed.

Testing included two lenses;

SMC PENTAX-DA 40MM F2.8 XS LENS SMC PENTAX DA 18-270MM F3.5-6.3 ED SDM

Test photographs were spanning many subjects including;

Long range High Altitude Children, Pets, Wildlife Sports General

The camera's greatest strength is capturing very fine details. This in part to the top of the line image sensor as well as a stock lens that appears un-beatable. It allows for manual as well as automatic focusing. The Pentax "K" lens mount on the camera means that the K-01 is compatible with just about every lens Pentax has ever produced.

The K-01 is excellent in low light conditions. There was minimal graininess until it became noticeable with ISO 6400. It also excels in capturing action shots via continuous shooting.

With such a large body, it is easily held, by all hand shapes and sizes. The rear 3” LCD monitor is responsive enough for accurate framing and focusing.

Admittedly, owning one of the older manual Pentax’s as well as the 2nd generation Optio may have given this camera an unfair advantage. However, having reviewed similar digital offerings from the likes of Canon, Nikon and Panasonic, It can easily be said, that the K-01 is to hybrid cameras, what the Toyota Prius is to hybrid cars.

The K-01 comes highly recommended. The slide show, shows a few photos with the camera. You can also look at my FACEBOOK folder that has almost 31 shots with it.
