A report published in Times of India on February 2, 2013 states that in an online attack, hackers have gained access to personal information of over 250,000 Twitter users from its 200 million active users.
The social media network has confirmed in a blog posting that the site detected attempts of hackers trying to gain access to its user data. Moreover, it also stated that the site successfully closed one attack after it was detected.
According to the social media giant, the attackers might have been successful in gaining access to usernames, email IDs and even passwords of its over 250, 000 users.
However, Twitter has reset the passwords and informed its users to create new one via email.
Twitter in its blog stated that this attack is not an act of amateurs and they also think that other organizations might as well have been attacked similarly.
An expert commented that the Twitter hack likely happened due to compromising of an employee's home or work computer due to vulnerability in Java language.
