A new iPhone and Android app called Uchek unveiled at this week's Technology, Entertainment and Design (TED) Conference in Long Beach, California will allow users to have their urine analyzed for 25 different illnesses on their cellphones.Myshkin
Ingawale, the co-founder of Biosense Technologies said he thought of the idea by putting two concepts together:
"Everybody pees, and everybody carries a cellphone."
Ingawale told TED conference attendees that the app collects a sample in a cup and dip a test strip. The app uses the phone’s camera to analyze the color of strip to give you results. Ingawale added that in over 1200 test samples, the app performed better than humans who were reading the strips.
According to a description of uChek on the company's website:
"uChek is a smartphone App to analyze & interpret urine using your phone's camera. It can detect up to 8-10 parameters (depending upon the strip used) and detect up to 25 diseases based upon these parameters. Some of the parameters that uChek can detect are levels of glucose, proteins, ketones, etc. and it can detect diseases like diabetes, urinary tract infection, pre-clampsia, etc. While it is currently available for iPhones, we plan to soon launch it on Android and other platforms"
While the uChek app website states that the application is already available on Apple’s App Store uChek, the app is still awaiting Apple iTunes store approval. UChek is currently being tested in a Mumbai hospital, and the Android version is still in development. Due to various cameras used on all the different Android phones the debut will take longer. The cost of the application is $99, and the packet of test strips are sold separately for $20.
UChek seeks to simplify the urine analysis process in an affordable way. Although $120 is far more costly than the average cellphone "app," the maker points out that uChek will cut down the cost of future doctor office visits.
