In an effort to save more than $2 billion dollars a year the United States Postal Service will stop delivering mail on Saturday. Packages will still be delivered six days a week. Mail cutback is scheduled to start in August of 2013.

This move will accentuate the company’s package program which has grown 14% since 2010, while the delivery of mail has been steadily on the decline. Post offices that are open on Saturdays will currently remain open on those days.

Over the past few years the Post Office has repeatedly appealed to Congress to switch to a five day delivery system. They have been unsuccessful until now. Congress has approved no mail delivery on Saturdays but packages will still be delivered six days a week.

The post office said it suffered a loss of $15.9 billion in 2012. It’s not immediately certain how the USPS will gain congressional approval but they believe they have the public’s support in this action.
