In their ongoing fight for indigenous peoples Anonymous has hacked Anglo American, a UK based multinational mining company and the world’s largest platinum producer. In addition, Anonymous hacktivists leaked a large portion of Anglo American’s database, including the personal information of 122 investors, and more than 400 registered shareholders.
The hack of Anglo American is part of Operation Green Rights ( #OpGreenRights ), an ongoing operation dedicated to “fight for human rights and against big companies which destroy nature and ancient cultures.” Anonymous hacktivists announced the hack on March 5, via the Operation Green Rights blog and Twitter account .
Softpedia reports the hackers breached the company’s angloplatinum.co.za and angloplatinum.com websites from which they leaked a fairly large amount of data. The information published online by the hacktivists includes administrator usernames and passwords (in clear text), and investor details, such as names, email addresses, phone numbers and, in some cases, even passwords.
The following is an excerpt from a statement issued by Anonymous hacktivists on the Operation Green Rights blog :
Anglo American, you destroy nature and pursue and kill indigenous people. In the name of tribal leaders, whom you have offended, and the natives you have deported, in the name of the miners killed during a strike against your dirty company, in the name of nature that you consider as a source of gain: We curse you!

Operation Green Rights is no stranger to big hacks. In July of 2011 Operation Green Rights was credited with hacking the multinational giant Monsanto, taking down Monsanto's corporate website and compromising numerous corporate mail web servers. In addition, Anonymous released the names, addresses, phone numbers and email addresses of 2500 Monsanto employees and associates.
