A huge asteroid is reported to be on its way, and scheduled to make a close brush near the Earth. The Huffington Post reported on Wednesday, March 6 that the newly discovered asteroid is roughly the size of a football field, and is due to pass by Earth on Saturday, March 9.
The asteroid is describe to be about 330-foot-wide, and will barely miss the Earth by about 600,000 miles this Saturday. This is the second asteroid to get relatively close to our planet in the past few days, on Monday a 33-foot asteroid sailed by miles of the planet.
Dubbed asteroid 2013 ET, when the space rock makes it way towards us Saturday it is reported to be equivalent to 2.5 times the distance of the Earth and the moon, which means that it will be to far away for amateur stargazers to get a glimpse of.
But never fear if you want to see the asteroid event the Huff Post states that the Virtual Telescope Project in Italy, run by astrophysicist Gianluca Masi, will webcast a live telescope view of the space rock's flyby on Friday (March 8), beginning at 2 p.m. EST (1900 GMT). News casters and scientist claim that the Earth is in no danger from the asteroid, but with all the near misses and catastrophic movies their is a certain amount of nervousness, and fear among a few of the Earths inhabitants who are tweeting the news today.
NASA researchers have identified and mapped the orbits of 95% of the 980 or so near-Earth asteroids at least 0.6 miles wide, which could threaten human civilization if they hit us. None of these behemoths are on a collision course with Earth in the foreseeable future according to Mashable.
For comparison, the asteroid believed to have wiped out the dinosaurs 65 million years ago likely measured about 6 miles across, scientists say.
