David Ranta suffered a massive heart attack just 48 hours after being released from prison for the first time in 23 years according to MSN reports on Sunday, March 24.
Ranta's attorney, Pierre Sussman stated that David Ranta was released from prison after being jailed for 23 years for a murder that he didn't commit and is now being treated in a New York hospital after suffering a major heart attack on Friday night.
David Ranta was exonerated and released from prison on Thursday after serving a long sentence of 23 years of 37 year sentences for the murder of Brooklyn rabbi Chaskel Werberger in 1990.
On Thursday, March 21, David Ranta left the Brooklyn courtroom a free man after a judge said that he was free to go, saying to reporters that finally being a free man again felt "overwhelming."
"I said from the beginning," Ranta said. "I had nothing to do with this case." When asked what he was going to do next, he responded, "Get the hell out of here."
On Thursday Ranta's family, including siblings and his pregnant daughter who was just 2 when he was arrested, were on hand when Judge Miriam Cyrulnik cleared his name. Ranta's parents died, while he was in prison.
"It's clear that the effects of this case have been devastating," Cyrulnik said. "To say I'm sorry for what you have endured would be an understatement."
Shortly after enjoying a celebratory steak dinner, Ranta became ill and was rushed to the hospital where he awaits life-saving procedures to unblock his arteries.
Prosecutors say they now suspect the murderer is man who died two months after Werzberger was killed. They did not name him.
