In this exclusive interview, I spoke with Wilde and Dewirs about the back-end of the site and their plans for the future.
The site was designed from the ground-up by two teams of 16 developers headed by Lead Developer, Doug Dewirs, a 30-year veteran software developer known for creating applications such as Aldus Fetch / Extensis Portfolio and the photo-centric site for The Workbook.
Utilizing, among other technologies, apple's web objects, the developers tell us that they paid attention to the need for simple, clean, human-interaction. According to Dewirs, "no downloading of players, no flash, no java, no plug-ins are necessary in order to virtually interact."
One of the challenges facing the team was the concept of what Dewirs calls "content sharing" as opposed to the more common "screen sharing." The site allows two users to view each other's space while they are navigating separately through their own unique environments. This facilitates individualized dynamic scaling of images and utilizes all the real-estate available to each user at that particular moment, It also guarantees that the images will not be cropped. Dewirs explains that what works at a certain screen resolution for one user, might not be ideal for the second user. The programming design allows for individualized scaling as well as real-time manipulation by either party of the images contained in the virtual portfolio that is under review.
