Looks like Evernote has some competition. Exclusively for devices running Android 4.0 and up, Google released it's own note-taking app, Google Keep , yesterday on March 20 that looks very solid from the get-go.
After debuting a little over a day ago, it has become the top trending app on Google Play and tenth among top new free apps.
Along with a clean interface, users have the choice to write notes, of course, create a checklist or take a photo and add it to a note. It also translates voice memos into text when typing isn't an option.
Those who like to color code their notes will have eight colors to choose from. If a simple note turns into a checklist, there's no need to go back to make one. The "show checkboxes" option can turn any set of notes into a checklist, even with a photo.
Users with Android 4.2 and up get a widget they can put on their lock screen for taking notes without unlocking their phone.
Keep's notes can be accessed, created and edited on the web on Google Drive at drive.google.com/keep , but there's no link on Drive to access notes.
Google would be smart to add a shortcut in Drive or a web extension for Keep so users won't have to keep typing in the address bar or bookmark it.
It doesn't make up for the impending retirement of Google Reader, but Google Keep looks like a nice addition to the Google family, if they keep it.
