When the Galaxy Note smartphone was first released in October 2011, it broke new ground by offering the largest display in the industry—a huge 5.3-inch screen. It was deemed a cross between a tablet and phone or “phablet.”
Since then it has remained the king of displays with its Galaxy Note 2 screen, clocking in at 5.5-inches. But according to a new rumor reported today by the Korea Times, the next Note will be even bigger.
The Twilight Zone
In Rod Serling’s classic drama-science fiction television show of the 60s, he described the Twilight Zone as a place found between light and shadow. With the ever increasing dimensions of Samsung’s Galaxy Note smartphone, it is approaching a twilight zone of its own as it skirts the area of becoming a small tablet instead of a large phone.
According to a source reporting to the Korea Times today:
''Samsung is working on introducing a new phablet using a 5.9-inch organic light-emitting diode (OLED) screen.''
The source also reported that the new Galaxy Note would be running on a Exynos 8-core processor chip produced by Samsung, which means it would out power any smartphone currently on the market.
The future of tablets
If the rumors are true about the release of a 5.9-inch Galaxy Note smartphone from Samsung, how much bigger can future iterations of the Galaxy Note be before it crosses over into tablet territory? If present standards hold true, the answer seems to be 7-inches.
But just as Samsung has skirted the domain of tablets with its large Galaxy Note smartphone, it is only a matter of time before tablet manufacturers go the opposite way and start producing smaller “sub-tablets” that clock in below 7-inches.
If Apple is looking for a new territory to conquer, the field for micro-tablets is wide open.
