It’s well known throughout the mobile phone industry that HTC is having a very hard time in making its business a success. Since April 2011 its stock value has plummeted by approximately 80 percent.
But some good news is on the horizon for HTC as it tries to pull itself up by its bootstraps with its new upcoming flagship smartphone—the HTC One. One missing piece of the puzzle to its possible rise from the ashes was added today, according to a report by AllThingsD; all major wireless carriers will sell the HTC One.
Verizon was a holdout
To have even a glimmer of hope in being a serious player in the smartphone market again, HTC needed to have all four wireless carriers committed to selling its HTC One. While AT&T, Sprint, and T-Mobile were onboard, Verizon was conspicuously missing.
This was a blow to HTC’s plans for recovery, but Verizon has apparently seen the light and has signed on for the One.
Although Verizon has committed to the HTC One, it will lag behind the other carriers by about two months as far as releasing the phone for sale. This is due to the testing cycle that all new phones must go through before they are ready for release.
Why the wait?
According to the word on the street, the HTC One looks like it will be a strong seller. Verizon may have had a change of heart because of this, even though HTC phones have had a hard time gaining traction with consumers.
Can HTC make a comeback?
HTC understands its problems and has been quite blunt about its difficulties. It has made self- assessments and has taken accountability for the situation by saying on past occasions:
[HTC] lacks … strategic direction or sense of urgency“; and “hasn’t done enough on the marketing front.”
Knowing that you’ve got a problem is good, but finding an answer to the problem is sometimes more difficult. For the execs at HTC, it hopes the One will be the solution.
