The first tweet of all time -- "just setting up my twttr"-- took place seven years ago today from co-founder Jack Dorsey. To celebrate, Twitter today has released a video looking back on their history and the web has followed their lead.

For Devindra Hardawar of VentureBeat when she first joined, Twitter was ”an indispensable tool for all of my work. It helped me keep track of news for my IT support job, and it was also a great way to get in touch with people in the entertainment industry for my budding movie podcast.”

Engadet is a bit more sceptical about the value of Twitter and it’s users. The article notes that after seven years, Twitter has 200 million active users tweeting 400 million 140-character messages per day. But, by their estimate, “...90 percent of which is people being snarky about the TV show they're watching.”

And in terms of documented accomplishments throughout Twitter history, PC Magazine points out some of Twitter’s biggest moments when, “In 2010, the Twitterverse was buzzing about the World Cup, while the earthquake and tsunami in Japan had users tweeting in 2011. Last year, events like the London Olympics, Grammys, and New York Fashion Week all lit up Twitter, and Barack Obama had the most retweeted message ever with three simple words: ‘Four more years.’"

To sum up the enormity of Twitter, NBC News basically ends up saying that we’d be lost without it -- “No matter Twitter's size next to its fellow social networks, one must admit that it has played a role in many historical events, and been a highly disruptive force in the media....”
