ABC News reported on March 19, 2013, that 59-year-old Benjamin Pierce Bishop, a defense contractor and former U.S. Army officer has been alleged of passing national defense secrets to a Chinese national.
According to the reports, Bishop had been in a romantic relationship with the 27-year-old woman, referred to as "Person 1."
A criminal complaint filed in the federal court on Monday in Hawaii states that Bishop, who kept information on top secret clearance, communicated everything he knew to the Person 1 via email (email address found to be used by Person 1).
The information included existing war plans, data about nuclear weapons, and relations with international partners.
Bishop met Person 1 during a conference on international military defense issues. As mentioned in the complaint she may have attended the conference to meet individuals such as Bishop who have access to secured information.
According to the records presented at the Court, Bishop had been in an intimate relationship with Person 1 since June 2011.
Furthermore, secret documents including ‘Fiscal Year 2014-2018 Defense Planning Guidance’ were found at Bishop’s home and he wasn’t authorized to posses them.
