Amazon has launched a new page whereby anyone can earn a $5 credit for each person they refer that signs up and joins Amazon Student , a program that gives college students free Amazon Prime benefits for six months.

Amazon Student not only allows college students to get the benefits of Amazon Prime, like six months of free Two-Day Shipping with Amazon Prime on eligible purchases and free release-date Delivery on video games, DVDs, books and more items, but it also forwards special deals and promotions exclusively for students to the program members.

The online retailing giant is also now making a push to get more college-bound and current college students signed up for Amazon Student by offering the $5 credit for each referral sign-up, and shopper can use their referral credits to buy just about anything on Amazon.com, with the credits automatically applied to your Amazon purchases at checkout in the order in which they expire (i.e., first to expire will be applied first).

You can't use the credits to buy gift cards, nor to pay shipping, handling, or taxes.

If you're an eligible member, Amazon will notify you via e-mail that you've received a referral credit seven days or more after a non-member clicks your link and completes the Amazon Student signup process.

"Amazon Student is a free membership program created especially for college students," they write, explaining, "Amazon Student members get and will automatically continue receiving Amazon Prime benefits at a cost of $39 a year for up to four years with automatic renewal. After you graduate or at the end of your fourth year of Amazon Student $39 Prime benefits, whichever comes first, your subscription will automatically upgrade on its anniversary date into a full paid subscription for Amazon Prime at $79 a year."
