Three men aboard a Brazilian transit van raped an American woman in a six-hour abduction in the seaside district of Copacabana over the weekend, reported NDTV on April 2, 2013.

According to the police, the 21-year-old girl had been in Brazil on a student visa. The woman was escorted to two public hospitals, Miguel Couto and Rocha Maia for medications to prevent STDs (sexually transmitted diseases) and pregnancy.

The attackers biffed the woman's face and tied up her male friend who is reported to be a French citizen. They also beat him with a metal bar as he saw the torturous assault.

Before leaving them at a bus station on the fringes of Rio de Janeiro, the culprits forced them to withdraw some money from their bank cards.

This incident has shocked the people in Brazil, as Rio de Janeiro is preparing to host the 2014 World Cup and 2016 Olympic Games.

The police have arrested two suspects, one of whom has accepted being involved in the crime of rape. One more suspect was arrested on Monday.

NDTV quoted Aparecida Goncalves, the head of Brazil's national office for combating violence against women saying "Everyone should be shocked by this horrendous crime."

She also mentioned that the reports concerning gang rape have been relatively low in Rio other parts of Brazil.

However, the rape on public transportation including buses and subway cars is a burning cause in some of the large cities.
