According to a report on CS Monitor dated April 4, 2013, 100 people were arrested in southeast Connecticut on Wednesday alleging participation in heroin and cocaine trading from the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico.

The suspects sprawled in four northeast states. They had been trafficking drugs since 15 months. More than 700 law enforcement officers undertook arresting in Connecticut, New York, Rhode Island, Massachusetts and Puerto Rico.

The investigation was lead by federal prosecutor's office in Connecticut along with a division of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

An unspecified amount of the narcotics was seized. Some was found in the packets while some was hidden in the bodies of human couriers. According to the reports, they had swallowed the packets of heroin and brought it via flights.

Luis Ariel Capellan Maldonado, a suspect, was found to have been operating from his apartment in New London. He used to pimp multi-kilogram quantities of heroin on a regular basis from the Dominican Republic.

CS Monitor quoted U.S. Attorney David Fein, who said to a news conference at a National Guard facility in Niantic that "This is a massive operation that we did today. Especially for a city the size of New London, it's a major operation."
