A face-sized giant tarantula has been found in Sri Lanka and its photograph has gone viral since April 3, 2013, reports The Epoch Times. Sri Lanka’s Biodiversity Education and Research group along with Scientists found the giant face-sized tarantula.
This eight-legged enormous spider is surprisingly real. Reportedly, the trees in Sri Lanka are their only habitat on this Earth.
This giant tarantula called "Poecilotheria rajaei" was discovered near an old doctor’s residence at the hospital in Mankulam, situated in the Northern part of Sri Lanka.
Tarantulas constitute a group of somewhat hairy, very large air-breathing arthropods that belong to the Theraphosidae family of spiders. Around 900 species of these are known till date.
Some species of these fright-inspiring tarantulas is not dangerous to humans. According to the Sky News the giant tarantula has a typical pink band around its body.
Researcher Ranil Nanayakkara said to Wired that “They are quite rare.” He added that the face-sized tarantula loves to make well-established old trees as their habitat but due to deforestation, they find old buildings suitable to live.
