Geek Girl is an organization that's every no-so-tech-savvy girl's dream. Founded by Leslie Fishlock, it provides a fun and engaging environment for those want to learn more about technology without encountering the condescension of those who may think that they are all-knowing tech gurus. Her inspiration for creating Geek Girl was the women in her life. Indeed, Fishlock states:
"There are a myriad of expos, meetups, events, etc. where people can learn all about the latest in computers and the Internet. But they all are driven to and for the 'ultimate geek.' We wanted something for the 'average wannabe geek girl.' In an environment where no one ever has to feel silly about asking the wrong question and getting laughed at."
Geek Girl offers workshops, seminars, and conferences that teach learners a variety of technology and computing skills in such ares that include but aren't limited to:
Social Media Blogging Photoshop Quickbooks Mac and PC Programming Design Email marketing Google Docs
If you can't make it to any of these events but would still like to take some classes offered by GeekGirl, you can visit GeekGirl.tv for workshops, podcasts, online events and educational video tutorials.
Geek Girl is the average woman's source for technology literacy. Fishlock states that it is for the "the average gal, the beginner, the intermediate and even the advanced who wants to be involved." Geek Girl is a testament to the advances that women have made in the STEM fields. For centuries, women have been excluded and ostracized when embarking upon a career in these fields. Even today, there still exists little room or patience for girls and women who aren't gifted mathematicians and scientists but still want learn more about technology and other STEM related fields. Geek Girl is a giant leap forward for us all.
