The buzz around the internet is that Austin, Texas will be the next city to get Google Fiber. Currently the only other place where the product is currently available is the greater Kansas City area.
Google Fiber is the internet connection service that claims to have connection speeds 100 times faster than the average broadband band connection for only $70 per month.
Google Fiber raises many questions
If the Google Fiber project were something we could say is coming soon to a neighborhood near you it would be a great boom for internet users. Unfortunately,
other than a small area in Missouri and Kansas, and now a rumored area in Texas, Google Fiber seems more of a mystery than an innovation.
Does Google really have a plan to roll out Google Fiber to many major metropolitan areas over the next few years? Or is Google Fiber just a gimmick to draw attention to the internet services giant?
How practical is it to choose a few select cities with super fast connections? Website owners and developers are forced to create websites that service their typical customers and will .
As this article from Ars Technica explained when the service was first rolled out in Kansas City, "The rest of the Internet is too slow for Google Fiber."
Too fast to be practical?
An analogy that might illustrate the widening gap between Google Fiber and current broadband speeds is that of an automobile. What if an auto maker claimed they could
produce a sports car that brags being able to reach speeds of 200 miles per hour at a cost much less than any of the competitors.
With so many Americans living in the typical residential neighborhood, would a low cost car that hits 200 miles per hour seen a much of an innovation? Or would it set off an argument for better highways?
Should thank Google for showing us what is possible? Or should we wonder what they are really planning?
