For OS X fans, each new update on Apple’s operating system is greatly anticipated. The latest one coming down the pike is OS X 10.9, and according to a report by 9to5Mac.com today, this OS promises to offer some powerful enhancements for hardcore Mac users.

Shaken, not stirred

Unlike previous iterations of OS X such as Tiger, Snow Leopard, Lion, and Mountain Lion, which had notable overhauls to their operating systems, OS X 10.9 will have powerful enhancements and features, while maintaining a familiar user interface.

The new OS will change up the way the Finder application works and will add tags and tabbed browsing modes; features that were previously only available through third-party hacks.

Apple’s Safari browser will also see some changes and will feature increased speed, page loads, and a redesigned back-end to improve the browsing experience for Internet surfers.

Other rumors

Sources within the Mac community indicate that Apple is working on new multi-tasking OS abilities that will emulate the quick app-switcher feature on iPods, iPhones, iPads, and iTouch devices.

This essentially means many programs can be left “running’ in the background and be instantly accessed by clicking on them. Whether this feature will make it into OS X 10.9 is still up for grabs.

Siri, Apple’s voice activated app, was rumored to be in the testing phases in early builds of 10.9, but it is uncertain if this feature will remain in the final version of the new OS.

The future

Current guesstimates by the industry, on when OS X 10.9 will be released, generally agree upon an early summer release sometime in June. No word on how much the new upgrade will cost, but if the past several upgrades are any indication, it may cost $19.99 to $29.99.

In comparison, typical Windows OS updates generally will set back PC users $100 or more, and often with bugs still not addressed in the OS. Apple is certainly making it easy for new and old customers of Apple to love the company—they don’t have to shell out a small fortune each time a new version of a Mac OS is released.

A new cat?

While the new OS is codenamed “Cabernet” inside Apple, because of the company’s penchant for naming its new operating systems after wild cats, we’ll throw our hat into the ring and guess it may be publically released as “Panther.”
