The huge gamble that Nokia took in February 2011 to drop its proprietary Symbian phone OS in order to switch over to the Windows platform caught the industry by surprise. But Nokia’s Lumia line of Windows powered phones is increasing in popularity, bit by bit.
The next model in the fledgling smartphone line is the Lumia 928, and Bloomberg reports today that Verizon Wireless will be spearheading the launch of the new flagship phone from Nokia.
A first
Verizon, up to now, has never featured a Nokia Lumia phone in its product lineup, but according to inside sources, the two companies have struck a deal to unveil the Lumia 928. Leaked information also indicates that the new phone will be available sometime in May 2013. No pricing on the new phone is available yet.
Possible specs
Various websites around the Internet have released information on the upcoming Lumia 928. Although the specs have not been confirmed by Nokia, the reported features are virtually identical to the Lumia 920:
1.5 GHz, dual-core processor 1 GB of RAM 16 GB of storage 4.5-inch 1280 x 768 display 8.7-megapixel camera with optical image stabilization 2000 mAh battery
What distinguishes the Lumia 928 from the 920? Some sources indicate that the 928 will be slightly thinner and have a new case made out of polycarbonate or aluminum. Others speculate that the electronics of the phone will be upgraded.
Refresh, upgrade or surprise?
With the upcoming introduction of the Lumia 928 phone, the question must be asked as to why Nokia would produce such a similar product that mimics the 920 model almost note by note.
Apple and Android fans are constantly on the lookout for the latest and the greatest in mobile products, and Windows phone fans are no different.
If the Lumia 928 is nothing more than an old model phone in new packaging, it will take more than that to swing current and new customers to buy the Lumia 928. And if this is the case, Nokia may be hiding a surprise that no one knows about..
