The Latinos Post reported on April 12, 2013, that a high school in California banned its girl students from wearing leggings in school as they think they are a "distraction" in the classroom.
The ABC News quoted Emily Dunnagan, the principal of Kenilworth Junior High school in Petaluma, California as saying, "Leggings have become popular among girls and many are sheer, when girls bend in leggings the threads spread and that's really when it becomes a problem."
"The goal is to teach kids to respect themselves and dress appropriately," she added.
The decision was taken by the principle of the school who reinforced the policy during an all-girl student assembly last Thursday.
Girl students and parents of the school were surprised by the new rules mentioned by the principal Dunnagan who stressed to the female students that they are required to wear a "school-appropriate length bottom," seomething like shorts, a skirt or a dress, over leggings.
Most of the mothers of the students of the school, young and old, defended thats the students wearing leggings are for "comfort" and "variety" and nothing else.
Jerelyn Kruljac, a parent said, "Boys need to be taught to respect women no matter what they're wearing, and that's a big deal,"
