WhatsApp, a cross-platform messaging app, has now officially become bigger than Twitter, according to a new report from tech website VentureBeat (VB).

In its report VB had mentioned that WhatsApp CEO Jan Koum claim that WhatsApp is now bigger than Twitter. Here's some excerpts from Koum on the subject: "WhatsApp is now bigger than Twitter with 200 million monthly active users. The company daily processes eight billion inbound messages and twelve billion outbound."

Koum went on further to say in his interview the company’s stance on the platform’s anti-advertising philosophy saying “We do have a manifesto opposing advertising. We’re proud of that. Who likes advertising? We’re so bombarded with ads so much in our daily lives and we felt that smartphones aren’t the place for that. Our phones are so intimately connected to us, to our lives. Putting advertising on a device like that is a bad idea. You don’t want to be interrupted by ads when you’re chatting with your loved ones.”

When Koum was asked if he would like to convert the app’s popularity into significant revenue the WhatsApp CEO said “Build the platform and the revenue will follow. We’re looking forward to a world with billions of phones. And once that happens it’s going to be extremely easy to monetize. But a lot more people need to join the smartphone revolution and a lot more people need to buy more goods on their phones. There are plenty of businesses that don’t use advertising. We want to be one of them. Our monetization strategy is simple. One dollar a year. If we did something besides that it would just get in the way. We want a great product and great user experience.”
