Anonymous hacktivists fight to stop ritual killings in the African nation of Gabon, where certain human body parts are prized by some for their supposed supernatural powers.
On Thursday, May 9, Anonymous hacktivists released a statement via YouTube and Pastebin discussing Operation Gabon ( #OpGabon ) a campaign whose main goal is to put an end to the ritual killings currently taking place in Gabon. According to the statement, Anonymous will be leading a protest and releasing a twitter storm package for #OpGabon on May 11. The following is a brief excerpt from that statement :
We won't rest until legal action is taken against ritual killings of children in Gabon.
In the statement, Anonymous hacktivists encourage concerned netizens to sign the petition, " Stop ritual crime in Gabon .”
Operation Gabon began last month, and focuses on petitions, live protests and Twitter storms. The operation has already enjoyed some success, raising public awareness of the problem, and forcing Gabon’s President, Ali Bongo, and his wife, to acknowledge the existence of ritual killings, something they had previously denied.
AFP reports the ritual killings are practised by secret sects involved in witchcraft. They usually involve taking a victim's blood and certain parts of their body - eyes, eyelashes, ears, genitalia, tongue, lips, pieces of skin, the brain - which are supposed to bring health, riches, success and power.
Softpedia reports some Gabon government sites have been hacked by Anonymous as part of Operation Gabon, and several websites belonging to the government of Gabon have been disrupted by Anonymous hackers. Websites of the Gabonese president, the Department of Defense and the Ministry of Justice have all been targeted with distributed denial-of-service (DDOS) attacks.
