International hacktivist collective Anonymous leads global protests against biotech giant Monsanto: Operation Monsanto ( #OpMonsanto ) engaged.

On Saturday, May 25, concerned citizens around the world marched in solidarity against Monsanto and the threat of their genetically modified foods.

The U.S. based multinational agricultural biotechnology corporation Monsanto stands accused by Anonymous and others of destroying the environment and poisoning the world's food source. The complaints against Monsanto are simply too numerous to catalog here. Suffice it to say that for many environmentalists Monsanto and their genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and other adventures in biotech threaten the survival of the human race.

Monsanto is facing the wrath of activists “because they are altering the nature of our food supply without a concern about long term effects on human health, because they are creating a monopoly on the supply of seeds for farmers and, because of increasing evidences of long term environmental damages,” according to a statement released by Anonymous.

The following is an excerpt from that statement :

Research studies have shown that Monsanto's genetically-modified foods can lead to serious health conditions such as the development of cancer tumors, infertility, birth defects, and other dis-eases.

For too long, Monsanto has been the benefactor of corporate subsidies and political favoritism. Organic and small independent farmers suffer losses while Monsanto continues to forge its monopoly over the world's food supply, including exclusive patenting rights over seeds.

Monsanto's GMO seeds are harmful to the environment. Scientists have indicated they have contributed to colony collapse among the bee population.

There are many solutions: voting with your dollar by buying organic, labeling of GMO foods, repealing relevant provisions of the US's "Monsanto Protection Act". But today we are asking you to take a first step and help us to inform the public about Monsanto's secrets. Join us in the march to the streets to show the world and Monsanto that we are aware and want them to be held accountable. We will not stand for cronyism. We will not stand for poison.

We Are Legion.

We Do Not Forgive.

We Do Not Forget.

Expect Us.

This is not the first time Anonymous has challenged Monsanto. In the past, Anonymous has hacked Monsanto’s corporate website, as well as hacking a public relations firm representing Monsanto.
