At a press conference today, Google revealed the new Nexus 7 tablet.

The new tablet, which is made by ASUS, improves upon last year's version of the Android-based unit. The screen has been notably bumped up to 1920 x 1200, with a pixel density of 323ppi, which should give the tablet a sharp and crisp image.

The touch-screen is said to be scratch-resistant, while Google claims it is also fingerprint and smudge-proof.

"Together with ASUS, we took what you loved about the original Nexus 7 and made it even better,” said Sundar Pichai, Senior Vice President of Android, Chrome and Apps at Google. “It is now thinner, lighter and faster, with the world's highest resolution screen in a 7-inch tablet. Whether you are sitting at home, in a coffee shop or at the airport, the new Nexus 7 is powerful, portable and made for what matters to you."

Under the hood, the Nexus 7 sports a 1.5GHz quad-core S4 processor, 2GB of RAM and an Adreno 320 GPU. Google also announced that the tablet will run on the new Android Jelly Bean 4.3.

The Nexus 7 will support NFC and 802.11n Wi-Fi, along with Bluetooth 4.0 and supports the SlimPort for sending 1080p content to a television. There is a front-facing camera that is 1.2 megapixels and a 5-megapixel rear-facing camera. According to ASUS, the tablet is slimmer than the previous model (at 0.3 inches) and features stereo speakers that also use virtual surround sound.

The tablet will also come in an unlocked LTE edition, which will be compatible on AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon networks. The LTE model will go for $349 and will have 32GB of storage, while the Wi-Fi models will come in 16 GB ($230) and 32GB ($270) flavors, with both Wi-Fi versions scheduled for a July 30 release.
