The new Google Chromecast, a small dongle device for streaming TV online to television sets, has reportedly sold out at many of the major retailers which acquired the product. Included among them are Amazon, Best Buy and even the Google Play store.
The Los Angeles Times reported on July 25 that the Chromecast, a tiny digital TV receiver, has officially sold out at Amazon.com and the online Best Buy store within 24 hours of release. The Times notes that Google Play store has it available, although they indicate a shipping time of 3 to 5 weeks for the item. Certain Best Buy retail stores across the country may have the device in stock as well, but customers will need to check by their specific zip code.
The way Chromecast works is simple, as the tiny digital stream device is shaped similar to a USB jump drive. Simply plug it into the back of a hi-definition television set's available HDMI input and then control it using a smartphone, tablet or laptop. Some of the suggested services that can be "streamed" to the device include Google Play, Netflix, Chrome and YouTube content. There is no mention of Amazon Prime or Hulu Plus working with the device, but there's a way around that, it seems.
Currently, there are other streaming content devices on the market including the popular Roku and Apple TV, both of which go for $100 or less. So far neither of these streaming content device makers has made an item near that price point, but both of these devices offer a user interface and more content choices. There's word that Pandora will be added to the available "streaming" services that work with the dongle.
However, as Computer World noted in their "10 Interesting Things" article about the Chromecast, the kicker may be that the device allows for streaming the Google Chrome browser to a TV set. That unlocks further streaming possibilities, including the use of Hulu Plus or Amazon content on the TV. To do that, the device streaming the content to the Chromecast will need the Google Chrome browser installed first. Actually, first, the actual device needs to purchased, if possible with the way it seems to be flying off shelves.
As of this report, the best way to find a Chromecast is by calling the local Best Buy or checking their inventory online. The device is also being sold by "third party" sellers on Amazon or eBay, but consumers will likely pay a higher price, in some cases double that $35 price tag.
Readers, do you currently have the Roku or Apple TV? Do you think the Chromecast sounds like it would be worth having?
