Prosecutors in New York and San Francisco are looking out for you and your investments, particularly your smartphone, with the new Secure Our Smartphones Initiative. According to the Associated Press on July 18, District Attorney George Gascon and New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman are responsible for gathering top security experts to put security measures put in place by popular smartphone brands to the test.
The experts will be responsible for testing these new systems before a consumer has to find out the hard way whether they work or not. For the Galaxy s4, Lojack for Android is the system being tested. For Apple, it is the iPhone 5's activation lock. Experts will treat the devices as if they are stolen, and try to get inside the mind of a thief and see if they can break past the systems.
The FCC previously cited that nearly 1 in 3 robberies deals with a smartphone. The Associated Press also note that phone thefts account for 40 percent of all robberies in New York City For their part, the FCC is working on creating a database to track these stolen items.
The initiative is working to help ingrain a system of security that has been previously missing when dealing with high-tech phones and theft. The press release notes that the goal is also to keep phone thefts from turning violent.
Do you think these new measures could keep smartphone thefts from turning violent or will they make people even more relaxed about where they leave their phone?
