It has been said in this column before, but for home phone use only. Now it is you businesses turn; say hello to Ooma and say good bye to your HIGH phone bills. It's just that simple

After seeing it at CES a few years ago, we couldn't wait to get a hold of the new VoIP system that could very well give the major phone companies and even the VoIP companies a run for their fees, I mean money. This includes the ones that are known for the $24.95/month unlimited calling, as well as well known cable companies.

Unboxing was easy enough. We got the Original Ooma Telo and two Telo Handsets and were impressed. That was almost 3 years ago.

Well now, they have taken something that was already headed to the top of the VoIP market and improved it so it will now be propelled to the top spot. The Ooma Office system will transform the way you communicate.

We started the setup process, which took about 10 minutes from power up to being able making calls. The directions say to give it about 15 minutes, so this was a good first impression here. After going to Ooma's website to get my pin number and new phone number, the system set itself up.

You are able to use any phone handset. You can use ones that you can purchase from Ooma themselves, or simply head out to a box store and get the handsets you want. Our Ooma office was tested with two vTech cordless handsets.

So what does Ooma Office offer ? Well the list of features are impressive, and include; (but not limited to)

Unlimited calling in the US Call Waiting and Caller ID Voice Mail with one touch access Easy porting of your current number Crystal clear voice quality

All of the above, plus more is available with Ooma a single one time fee and starting at $19.99/mo. Due to federal regulations, you will have to pay taxes.

So how good is it ? How advanced is it ? Well before we tell you the greats of Ooma, you need to know what was done to test it.

After the setup, we made a few calls. In making some personal calls, I asked those on the other end how I sounded and they reported clear as a bell.

I set up the voice mail which took less than 3 minutes. I also set up my account which would be used as E911. The clarity on this end was even better than the original Ooma. It could not be compared to that of the cable company, as they were jettisoned when Ooma first came out.

So at this point, the set up was complete. From unboxing to making calls was 45 minutes. As stated earlier, people on the other end of my calling said that the sound was clear, and with out static or echoing.

Many features come with Ooma Office, including, but not limited to;

Bluetooth Support Conference Calling, Multiple Extensions Hold music/messages 2nd line/up to 4 avail Voice Mail DND Blacklists Many more

One important feature was put to the test. 24 hours later; I called 911, and verified that they had my correct address. They did.

The second part of the new Ooma that we tested, was the Linx. This was a simple device that plugged into any wall outlet and then sync’ed with the Telo unit. Then a no frills cordless phone was plugged into it. Again, just like with the actual Ooma handset, the quality was excellent. The Linx was placed in a room down a hall through 3 walls of horsehair plaster. It synced with the Telo w/i seconds and never dropped a conversation.

Ooma has an upfront cost of $199. Asside from the taxes as stated above. If you are paying more than $19.99 then you need to switch to Ooma.

So why not get the telo handsets too. Additionally, Ooma also has an iPhone/iPod app in the app store, which will allow you to make calls without using your minutes, again showing how Ooma is committed to becoming the top when it comes to the VOiP industry.

The iPhone app installed flawlessly and its clarity was as good as if we were using the Telo Handset.

Ooma's directions are clear and concise and could be followed by the novice or high tech expert. Their website is straight forward and it too will walk you through any steps necessary to get you going.
