Apple isn’t used to being in second place, but when it comes to the mobile market in China, Hong Kong and Taiwan, Samsung is supreme. Reuters reported on July 26 that during Apple's second quarter, revenue for Apple in Greater China fell a staggering 43 percent from the previous quarter. Samsung, currently holds 19 percent of the market while Apple holds nine.
Samsung, which is based in South Korea, has been in the market in China for a much longer period of time, which gives them the advantage over Apple. While Apple has 8 stores in China, Samsung has three times that number. BGR notes that Samsung's success draws from how well they know the market. Brad Reed states Samsung is willing "to spam a market with different variations of gadgets and its emphasis on jam-packing its phones full of “gimmicky” features of questionable usefulness.'
Samsung is also going into territory that Apple has been very reserved about. Samsung has been willing to work with different mobile operators and retailers, while Apple is still working out a revenue agreement with Mobile China. The agreement has been in the works for several years.
Tim Cook has noted that he sees great potential in China for Apple especially with the exception that the market will experience a surge in the next four years. Will these new figures motivate Apple to work harder to please their Chinese customers specifically?
