The ABC News reported that the tax free holiday, which is the third largest shopping period in the state after Christmas and Thanksgiving weekends , is just few weeks away.


For 2013, the states offering tax-free weekend are: Arkansas, Alabama, Connecticut, Georgia, Florida, Iowa, Louisiana, Mississippi, Maryland, Missouri, New Mexico, North Carolina, South Carolina, New York, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, Vermont, West Virginia and Washington D.C.,.


For current year, the Sales Tax Holiday weekend runs from August 2, 2013 at 12:01 am through August 4, 2013 at midnight.


Shoppers can save state sales tax and applicable local taxes for items like computers, shoes, backpacks, clothing, school supplies, printers, bedspreads and linens.


SCDOR officials have said that portable devices that have computing functions like computer tablets which can’t be used as a phone will also be now included in the tax exempt category.


The sales tax savings amount to 8.5 percent in Charleston, 8 percent in Berkeley County and 7 percent in Dorchester. For the local sales tax in other areas, visit here .


Nonexempt items during the weekend include cosmetics, jewelry, eyewear, furniture, or items placed on layaway cell phones.
