It looks like C3PO and R2D2 will be as happy as dancing Jawas because Motorola announced three new models of its popular Droid phones today at a New York City Verizon unveiling.
Droid Ultra
First up is the Droid Ultra, sporting a large 5-inch screen, a super thin 7.18mm profile that Motorola claims to be the thinnest smartphone with 4G LTE in the world, and a whopping 24-hours of battery life.
Droid Maxx
Those who know Motorola phones are familiar with the Razr Maxx, but this newest iteration of the MAXX line is the Droid Maxx, which also has a 5-inch screen, and unbelievable 48-hours of battery life. If you hate charging your phone every 4 or 5 hours, the Droid MAXX is a phone to consider.
In comparison to the Razr Maxx, the Droid Maxx is thinner and crams in 8 more hours of battery life.
Droid Mini
For those who think a 5-inch screen is just a bit of overkill, the Droid Mini may be more attractive. The Mini has a 4.3-inch screen and 24-hours of battery life. The smartphone weighs in at only 132 grams or just over 4.6 ounces for you non-metric folks out there.
Other upgrades
The three new phones are more than just pretty faces; they’re also a lot faster too. They’ll all have 8-CPUs, quad-core graphic processors, and more.
You can also expect to see 10-megapixel back-facing cameras, and 2-megapixel front-facing cameras. The smartphones are very durable and feature Kevlar layered cases, and tough Gorilla Glass for those occasional unexpected drops.
How much?
The prices for the Droid Mini, Droid Maxx, and Droid Ultra will be $99, $199, and $299 respectively, with a standard Verizon Wireless contract.
The phones will be available for shipping on August 20.
What it all means
With heavy competition coming from Samsung and Apple for smartphone market share, the Droid series of phones are sometimes overlooked and overshadowed by the “Big Boys” in the phone industry.
But with the introduction of the Droid Mini, Droid Maxx, and Droid Ultra, this shows that Motorola hasn’t given up yet and still sees itself as a viable alternative to the Galaxy and iPhone.
Whether Motorola can do a proper job of promoting its new phones is something else altogether.
