It was reported on July 25, 2013, that leftist Tunisian opposition party leader Mohammed Brahmi, 58, was shot dead by two gunmen Thursday morning.
Tunisia's interior ministry spokesman Mohammed Ali Aroui said, Brahmi was in his car outside his home when two gunmen fired several shots at him.
The two attackers then sped off on a moped after shooting Brahmi 11 times.
Soon people started gathering outside the Interior Ministry consulate demanding the downfall of the government. Reportedly, there were also demonstrations in many parts of the country.
This is the second murder of an opposition member this year. Chokri Belaid, a member of the same coalition as Brahmi was also shot dead in his car outside his home in February.
The leader of Ennahda, Rachid Ghannouchi, told The Associated Press, ""Tunisia was getting ready to crown its efforts to complete its transition, it was the last candle still lit."
He added, "The enemies of democracy want to snuff it out to enmesh Tunisia in the troubles found in the other countries of the Arab Spring."
Tunisia is celebrating its 56th anniversary of becoming a republic after getting independence from France.
