Cyber Acoustics is a top contender in the computer audio equipment market with their products being widely sold across the United States, Canada, France, Australia, Spain, and the United Kingdom.

Last year the company released the CA-3908 2.1 speaker system, and it still stands as one of the best speaker systems they have ever made.

The CA-3908 2.1 speaker system packaging is like others with a large photo of the speakers system on the front with a few specifications written across the side, and then the back featuring a smaller photo of the speakers and much more information in multiple languages.

Inside is the unit itself, each piece wrapped in plastic, consisting of a subwoofer, two satellite speakers, a wired control pod, an auxiliary cable, an iPod/phone stand, and a user manual.

The speakers themselves are fairly average looking with the two satellite speakers featuring a glossy black front behind removable cloth grills and the subwoofer a plain non-gloss black color. The control pod matches the gloss black seen on the front of the satellite speakers and has controls for the power, volume and bass as well as a headphone jack and auxiliary port.

The speaker system, designed primarily for computers, connects through a 3.5mm cable that can easily be plugged into the back of most computers. For connecting to a gaming console or television, a Y adapter is needed and is not included with these speakers. This can be a hassle for people buying these for something other than their computer.

The instructions included in the manual explains how to setup the speakers on computers, MP3 players, and gaming consoles very well. The satellite speakers are also clearly marked ‘Left’ and ‘Right’ and there are only the essential connectors on the back of the subwoofer making installation easy.

Speaker sound quality is somewhat subjective, so it is worth noting that the performance review is in the opinion of the reviewer and should be taken as you see fit. The speaker system was testing using the both on a PC with an ASUS Xonar Essence STX Virtual 7.1 sound card and the Playstation 3 connected with a Y adapter.

The first test was music. With a lot of emphasis on the bass, the genre used was rap. The bass in the test song was really powerful. It is easily adjustable on the control pod. The satellite speakers feature the music effectively with high highs and low lows. An impressive first test.

Next was the movie test. This was tested primarily on the Playstation 3 using both a television show on Netflix and an action film on Blu-ray. The upgrade from the television’s speakers is obviously notable. Again the subwoofer feels as it should, and has a lot of kick for its size. The satellite speakers separate the sounds well, whether it be ambience during dialogue or all of the noise during action sequences. This speaker system does not disappoint for a 2.1 format and really pushes what it is capable of.

Finally is the gaming test. Here, the first person shooter genre was used and more than 2.1 is desired. It does sound nice and clear, with a great bass, but as far as trying to tell which way an enemy is coming from is difficult with only a left and right side. Console users may be used to this type of sound, but PC gamers might notice the lack of surround more. However, on non-FPS games such as racing or MOBAs, this speaker system works amazing. The subwoofer, however, is a welcome feature on every gametype.

The Cyber Acoustics CA-3908 2.1 speaker system is a fantastic speaker set, although some might find them a little pricey for some computer speakers. They aren’t surround sound, so there are limitations, but they sound great and even go outside the boundaries of most 2.1 speakers. The subwoofer is a notable improvement over a lot of other 2.1 systems as well. Overall, a worthy purchase if you’re looking for one of the best 2.1 speaker systems out right now for the price.
