If you've shied away from Google Glass due to its rather high cost, there's hope for your high-tech future. GigaOm reported on Aug. 9 that a researcher in China named Jason Tsai expects the actual cost to drop by the date of release, which could be as early as the end of 2013.
The current price of Google Glass stands at $1,500 for people who wanted to be part of the “Explorer" program, which turned out to be around 8,000 people. However, GigOm and Phandorid both point out that this price point is far greater than the cost of materials would ever be.
To illustrate, Kevin D. Tofel explains, "Outside of the special display and bone conducting speaker, just about all of the same parts are in the Motorola MotoActv smartwatch I bought in early 2012….That device cost me $199 and I’m sure the parts for it today are priced far less. And that $199 price tag had some profit margin built in, so the actual bill of materials was likely in the $100 to $150 price range."
Phandroid’s Chris Chavez notes that even before this info, he’s never recommend anyone buy the technology if it were listed about $1,000. “Simply put, I can’t justify paying more than that given everything Glass offers,” Chavez wrote.
GigaOm notes that the reason the price has been listed so high is to dissuade those who don’t understand the tech from giving it a bad review. With the wearable tech scene growing exponentially, Google doesn’t need any setbacks, especially when they are leading the pack so far.
If Google Glass was set at $300, would you consider buying one?
