Outside of a broken phone, there is nothing more annoying for a smartphone user than running out of battery at the most innoportune time. I happen to be one of those power users who frequently uses my phone and/or tablet at various points of the day, be it for checking email, taking photos, going on social media sites or just to play the latest mobile games.
As such, there are plenty of manufacturers out there who make back-up batteries, either in the form of cases or separate devices. But what if you have more than one device, or have a family? Fortunately there is the iSound Portable Power Max, which delivers up to 480 hours of power that not only supports smartphones, but also the iPod, iPad and pretty much any other portable device that has a USB port.
With a huge 16,000 mAh battery, the Portable Power Max provides more than enough battery life for just about anything at any time. The unit includes 5 USB ports and has an LED indicator that lets you know how much battery life is left, as well as its charging status. During my extensive test of the unit, I managed to charge up my iPad, HTC One and even my Blackberry Z10 at the same time. While the manufacturer warns about charging too many high powered devices at once (for instance, you can't expect to charge 5 iPhones or 5 iPads at the same time), all three devices received a full charge within 1.5 hours. At another point, I charged my iPad mini and three active 3D glasses, as I was hoping to get in some movie watching time. The glasses charged up pretty quickly and I was ready to go in about 25 minutes.
Aside from its quick charging capabilities, the PPM also includes a built-in flashlight, which is an odd but quite handy feature to have, especially when traveling. I ended up using it a few times while charging my family's phones during a drive back home from San Francisco at night. The flashlight is extremely bright so it's a welcomed addition.
The unit comes with an AC adapter as well as a USB charging adapter for Blackberry phones (or any other device that still uses a micro-USB port.
The Portable Power Max is a little bit smaller than a VHS tape and while it has a little bit of heft to it, is still light enough to carry around. I wouldn't say it's small enough that anyone can easily slip it in their pockets, but it does fit. Of course for those who plan to carry it in the car, hand bag, backpack or while traveling, the PPM is portable enough to not be intrusive.
Running out of battery is no longer an issue with the Portable Power Max, and anyone who's with me is taken care of too. While battery-cases are nice to have, it's even cooler to be able to take care of multiple devices whether they're mine or someone elses. In that respect, the PPM is awesome and a highly recommended product.
Final Score: 5 out of 5
